The vestment of the figure portrayed on the upper segment, resembling the attire of Boris and Gleb featured on Ruthenian icons from the thirteenth/fourteenth century – apparently, another source of inspiration for Zaborowski – might have only manifested the realities of the time of the statue’s making, and it basically fits the early-mediaeval chronology. The so-called Sabre of Charlemagne, which was part of the coronation insignia of the Austrian emperors and might, in the Ukrainian researchers’ opinion, have served as a model for Zaborowski, actually dates to the tenth or, rather, eleventh century and does have its peers in the finds of weaponry of the eleventh-/twelfth-century Caucasian Alans. The sabre – the main chronology-defining element – has numerous counterparts in the armament of Turkish or Hungarian vagrants of the tenth and eleventh centuries. There is no aspect in the statue’s iconography which would have subverted the early-mediaeval dating of the statue. However, such an argument is far from evidence-based, or satisfactorily plausible. Khamaiko have recently put forth the conjecture that the idol was actually made in the nineteenth century by Tymon Zaborowski, a Polish early-nineteenth-century poet from Liczkowce/Lichkivtsi. Hence, doubts have been raised around the monument’s chronology, ethnic identification of its makers, and even its authenticity. The statue has moreover no close analogy that would feature multi-headedness and zoned layout of representations. Some of the problems stem from unsatisfactory evidence of the place and circumstances in which the statue in question was found.
